Interns are an integral part of The Florida Department of Health in Leon County (DOH-Leon) that supports our ability to expand our resources to improve the quality of life and health of our community. DOH-Leon has exciting internship opportunities available. Interns work in partnership with employees at our health centers, dental clinics, administrative offices, or in the community.

Internship Opportunities 

The Internship Services Office coordinates the placement of students from colleges and universities to complete their intern and externships.

DOH-Leon has skills-based intern and externship opportunities available for undergraduate and graduate students. Completing an experience with DOH-Leon combines education with experience to best prepare students for their career after graduation. 

The following internship programs are example placement options:

  • Clinical Care
  • Community Engagement & Health Education
  • Community Health Assessment and Planning
  • Communicable Diseases
  • Dental Clinic
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response
  • Environmental Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • School Health
  • WIC (Women, Infant, and Children)

How Can I Complete an Internship? 

DOH-Leon understands how vital it is to find the right internship experience. We collaborate with colleges and universities throughout the community and the United States to provide skills-based intern and externship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. DOH-Leon currently has formal agreements to provide intern and externship opportunities with the following schools: 

  • Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU)
  • Florida State University (FSU)
  • Tallahassee Community College (TCC)

Note: A formal agreement must be established with a college or university in order for student placement to occur. 

The following are requirements for all intern and externships: 

  • Agreement with School, College, or University
  • Completed volunteer and background screening application.
  • Completed and successful background screening
  • Completed mandatory training modules.
  • Non-Employee Orientation

*Must have a placement confirmed within the agency to begin the background screening process.

*Must pass background screening, mandatory training modules and attend orientation to intern with DOH-Leon.

 

Internship Applications 

Complete the Internship Application Form. Be sure read and answer each question and to include your desired placement area(s). Once placement is confirmed, a DOH-Leon representative will contact you to schedule your background screening to secure your placement at DOH-Leon!

Application Submission Deadline

Applications are accepted and can be submitted according to the dates below:

Semester

Application Window Open

Fall

June 1 – August 30

Spring

September 1 – November 30

Summer

February 1 – April 30

 

Background Screenings and Internship Orientation:

Background Screening Details:

  • Available every Tuesday 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.  You will be given a time if selected.
  • MUST bring a picture ID and Social Security card.
  • DOH-Leon internship badge photo will be taken at this time.
  • Students may check with your college/university for applicable background screening and provide an Attestation of Background Screening on school letterhead signed by the Dean.

Orientation:

  • Every 2nd Friday at 9:00 a.m. (lasts approximately two hours). Location will be given after completion of background screening.
