DOH Leon Celebrates National Registered Dietician Nutritionist Day

DOH Leon Celebrates National Nutrition Month

Tallahassee, FL--  During National Nutrition Month, celebrated each March, The Florida Department of Health in Leon County (DOH Leon) is celebrating and recognizing the importance of nutritious food.

This year’s theme, Celebrate a World of Flavors, embraces global cultures, cuisines, and inclusivity, plus highlights the expertise of registered dietician nutritionists.

There are so many fun ways to celebrate National Nutrition Month.

Staff from DOH Leon’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program, will bring information about nutrition support, healthy lifestyles, and connections to health resources to the community. Throughout the month, they’ll have a presence at our offices and clinics with display tables highlighting this year’s theme of celebrating flavors from around the world.

During National Nutrition Month and beyond, DOH Leon encourages everyone to make healthier food choice and eat more of these foods:

• Vegetables, including dark green, red and orange, beans, peas and others
• Fruits, especially whole fruits
• Whole grains
• Fat-free or low-fat dairy including milk, yogurt, cheese and fortified plant-based beverages
• Protein foods including seafood, lean meats, poultry, nuts, soy products, beans and peas
• Oils including canola, corn, olive, peanut, sunflower and soy

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. The Academy is committed to improving the nation's health and advancing the profession of dietetics through research, education and advocacy. Visit the Academy at https://www.eatright.org/

On an additional note, DOH Leon encourages everyone to consider other lifestyle choices that help ensure better health:

• Exercising about 30 minutes a day can lower blood pressure
• Avoiding the use of tobacco products can reduce several types of cancer
• Getting needed preventive screenings can detect diseases early and increase your chances for positive health outcomes
