DOH Leon Marks National Minority Health Month

Tallahassee, Fla--- April is National Minority Health Month, (NMHM) and this year, the Florida Department of Health in Leon County (DOH Leon) joins the Office of Minority Health (OMH) and others across the community to focus on health disparities that continue to affect racial and ethnic minority populations. The theme for National Minority Health 2022: Give your Community A Boost shines a light on the continued importance of COVID-19 vaccination, including boosters as one of the strongest tools we have to end the COVID-19 pandemic that has disproportionately affected communities of color.

DOH Leon continues offering all doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to residents by appointment, as well as well as partnering with a diverse group of healthcare and community organizations to get the vaccine to all members of our communities.

“We know that there are whole lot of people in our minority communities who still aren’t vaccinated and there are reasons for that,” said Sandon S. Speedling, MHS, CPM, CPH, DOH Leon Interim Health Officer.  “DOH Leon continues working with key partners to put energy and focus into addressing access and making sure the right information is delivered to those in hard-to-reach and underserved communities,” Speedling explained.

The Department’s Community Education and Engagement specialists continue street-level outreach that they started at the beginning of the pandemic by: supporting pop-up COVID-19 vaccine clinics; visiting neighborhood barber shops and hair salons for informal conversations around vaccine hesitancy; collaborating with the faith based community to fight disinformation and provide easy to understand educational brochures, and more.

In recognition of NMHM, DOH Leon will join community partners for events focusing on boosting healthy lifestyles. Among them:
