DOH Leon WIC Program Opens Farmers' Market

DOH Leon Farmers’ Market is Back

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health in Leon County (DOH Leon) and the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is proud to announce that Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons are now available for qualified WIC participants.

The DOH Leon program began on April 19, 2022 and lets pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding women and children ages one to five who are enrolled in the WIC Program to receive coupons to purchase fresh Florida produce at the WIC sponsored FMNP. The market is located at the DOH Leon Roberts & Stevens (R&S) Clinic, 1515 Old Bainbridge Road in Tallahassee.

It takes place in the main parking lot of the clinic and operates on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., weather permitting. FMNP allows WIC participants and the public to have access to locally grown, farm-fresh produce. The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted services for this program.

The DOH Leon WIC Office is very excited to bring back the farmers’ market at the R & S Clinic. “We have listened to community feedback and believe we have a scheduled day and time of the week for the market that is more accessible to our Griffin Heights neighbors, those in the Frenchtown community, and others,” said Dykibra Gaskin, DOH Leon Public Health Nutrition Program Director.

The market is open to the public. Customers can purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables using either their WIC/FMNP coupons or any other form of payment. Barnhart Farms also accepts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) coupons at their booth.

“With the addition of our farmers’ market program, more residents will be given the excellent opportunity to shop for fresh, local foods at the market,” said Gaskin.
