DOH Leon Recognizes National Mental Health Awareness Month

Residents struggling with mental health are encouraged to utilize available resources.

Tallahassee, Fla.-- This May, The Florida Department of Health in Leon County (DOH Leon) and our health care and community partners are proud to recognize National Mental Health Awareness Month, a national movement to raise awareness about mental health, fight stigma, and support the millions of people in this country who are living with a mental illness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is amplifying that message for 2022 under the theme: “Together for Mental Health.”

“Mental health impacts everyone in Leon County, and mental health is everyone’s business,” said Sandon S. Speedling, MHS, CPM, CPH, DOH Leon Interim Health Officer.  "The pandemic has taken a toll on everyone’s mental health. Knowing the signs and symptoms and who to link to if you are concerned about yourself or a loved one is an important first step in getting help.”

Data from NAMI Florida show more than two million adults in Florida have a mental health condition, and that 180,000 youth (age 12-17) struggle with depression.

Throughout the month of May, DOH Leon will be supporting local efforts designed to bring awareness on resources and practical tools that everyone can use to improve mental health. Collaborations with key community partners include:
