DOH Leon Celebrates Men’s Health in June
Barbershop Series Puts Focus on Health of Men and Boys
Tallahassee, Fla - The Florida Department of Health in Leon County (DOH Leon) recognizes June as National Men's Health Month, an annual awareness period solely dedicated to education and activities on the health and wellness of men and boys.
This year also marks the 28th anniversary of the establishment of National Men's Health Week as part of a larger awareness period of Men's Health Month. This year's National Men's Health Week is celebrated from June 13-19, 2022, ending on Father's Day.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 13.2% of men aged 18 and over are in fair or poor health.
"Annual activities that promote awareness like Men's Health Month are crucial in initiating conversations and leading men to be more engaged in their health," said Sandon S. Speedling, MHS, CPM, CPH, DOH Leon Interim Health Officer. "Making men healthier can only improve health for families and communities."
DOH Leon will be using the month of June to help educate men, boys, families, community members, and others about men's disease prevention, family screenings, healthy lifestyles, and positive family relationships. DOH Leon's Community Engagement Team is partnering with local barbershops to bring health education to a community setting known for open, frank, and trusted communication.
The barbershop series includes the following locations:
