DOH-Leon Investigating Cases of Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease

By DOH-Leon Public Information

September 14, 2016

The Florida Department of Health in Leon County is partnering with Florida State University Health Services on investigations into several confirmed cases of hand, foot and mouth disease on the FSU campus. The virus, which is not life-threatening, can develop in adults but is more commonly observed in infants and toddlers younger than 5 years old. Symptoms include fever, reduced appetite, sore throat, painful sores in the mouth and mild rashes on hands and feet. Treatment includes taking over-the-counter medications to reduce fever (aspirin should not be given to children) and mouthwash to numb throat pain. Contact your private health care provider for more information or visit the CDC at https://www.cdc.gov/hand-foot-mouth/index.html.
