Tallahassee – The Florida Department of Health in Leon County is teaming up with the City of Tallahassee and community partners to mark National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day.

A community get-together has been scheduled 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on September 18 at the Smith-Williams Service Center, 2295 Pasco Street.

The event will include presentations on the impact that HIV/AIDS has on the elder community, as well as a hot lunch, music and B-I-N-G-O.

The event is free and open to the public.

Additional partners include Minority Alliance Advocating Community Awareness and Action (MAACA), the Community Health Initiative and Positively U.

“HIV knows no age,” DOH-Leon Health Officer Claudia Blackburn said. “It’s important that everyone, regardless of age, learn the importance of getting tested, how to protect themselves against the virus and where to seek treatment should they be HIV-positive.”

National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day is a national campaign, launched by The AIDS Institute and recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of HIV/AIDS Policy and www.aids.gov. The national campaign highlights the complex issues related to HIV prevention, care and treatment for aging populations in the United States.
